Smith seeks Bougherra explanation

Rangers defender Madjid Bougherra
Bougherra was late back after international duty with Algeria

Rangers manager Walter Smith revealed he has yet to speak to defender Madjid Bougherra over his late return from World Cup duty with Algeria.

The 26-year-old was dropped ahead of the win over St Johnstone because he was two days late returning to Ibrox.

French-born Bougherra had featured in his side's 3-1 World Cup qualifying victory over Rwanda last Sunday.

"I'll have to speak to him to find out what the problem was as he was due back on Thursday," Smith told BBC Scotland.

Bougherra, who can also operate in midfield, has impressed at the heart of the Rangers defence since his £2.5m move from Charlton in July 2008.

He began his career with FC Gueugnon and moved to English football when he signed for Crewe in January 2006.

The defender then joined Charlton from Sheffield Wednesday for £2.5m before moving to Ibrox and has formed a formidable partnership with David Weir.
