Ferguson's Gers return on course

Rangers captain Barry Ferguson is on track to make a return from injury, against Inverness at the weekend.

The 30-year-old midfielder was an unused substitute in the Co-operative Insurance Cup win over Hamilton.

Ferguson came through 90 minutes in a reserve match on Wednesday, adding to the hour he played for the second string last week.

Ankle surgery at the end of last season has kept the Scotland ace out of the Rangers first team.

Despite the long absence, Ibrox team-mate Steven Davis believes Ferguson will have no trouble slotting back into the side.

"He's a good passer of the ball and I think he will fit into the team well again," said the Northern Ireland midfielder. "There is a lot of competition for places, especially in the midfield.

"He's a big player for us, he's the skipper and it will be great to have him back. He will obviously give the manager a bit of a headache when he comes back.

"We have a lot of quality in the midfield and it's going to be hard for everyone to stake a claim every week. It means pressure for everyone to perform."
