Rangers captain Barry Ferguson was delighted to break the Scottish record for European appearances with a Uefa Cup win over Werder Bremen.

"It's a proud night for me," he said after marking his 77th European tie for Rangers with a 2-0 victory at Ibrox.

"We worked ever so hard, especially in the first half and we played some good stuff in the second half.

"We know it will be tough in Germany because they are a quality side but we have every chance now."

Rangers earned the victory after goalkeeping errors from Tim Wiese allowed Daniel Cousin and Steven Davis to score.

And the SPL leaders could have stretched their lead further, with Davis, Ferguson and Lee McCulloch all going close.

"Confidence is high in the team right now - everyone is enjoying themselves," added Ferguson.

"We go into every game thinking we can win it.

"We were expecting to get a result but getting two goals is important and not conceding is equally important.

"But we're not taking anything for granted. We're only halfway there."

Rangers manager Walter Smith was also happy with the performance but is predicting a difficult second leg in Germany.

"It's a terrific result," he told BBC Sport.

"I was delighted with the way we managed to restrict them to so few chances.

"We will have to play as well, if not better, in the second leg because we expect to be put under a lot of pressure."
