Rangers 1-1 Energie Cottbus

A late Kevin Muscat penalty earned Rangers a draw against German side Energie Cottbus in their friendly in Dubai.

Rangers dominated the first half without scoring and a host of changes meant the game lost any flow it had.

The Bundesliga side took the lead on the hour mark through Laurentiu-Aurelian Reghecampf only for Muscat to deny them the win after Michael Mols was fouled.

Trialists Jerome Bonnissel and Dan Eggen both played and did their chances of winning a move to Ibrox no harm with decent displays.

Ronald de Boer fired in the first shot of the game but his effort on the turn was straight at goalkeeper Andre Lenz.

Bonnissel was seeing plenty of the ball down the left but when Thompson tried his luck from distance he too fired at the goalkeeper.

Fernando Ricksen did well to beat his man and get in a cross from the right but his delivery just eluded the head of the on-rushing De Boer.

Barry Ferguson's sweet pass found De Boer in space, but after his cross was half cleared Ricksen volleyed wide.

Ross squandered an excellent chance to opening the scoring when he fired wide after a clever De Boer flick had sent him galloping into space in the box. The Cottbus goal was at his mercy from just outside the six-yard box but the Scotland defender could not hit the target.

Rangers made five changes at the break, sending on goalkeeper Allan McGregor, defenders Bob Malcolm and Kevin Muscat plus strikers Claudio Caniggia and Michael Mols, with Stefan Klos, Ross, Lorenzo Amoruso, McCann and Thompson making way.

Caniggia was brought down just outside the area on the left but Ferguson fired the free-kick over the bar.

Cottbus sub Marko Topic fired his side's first dangerous effort but he also aimed too high.

At the other end, Caniggia was foiled by substitute goalkeeper Tomislav Piplica, who dived at his feet following De Boer's throughball.

The Germans took the lead through Reghecampf whose shot went in off McGregor's left-hand post.

Piplica made an impressive parry to deny Nerlinger's powerfully blasted effort from a free-kick.

Bonnissel and then Caniggia were both denied from the rebound before Mols fired a shot on the turn off the turf only for the goalkeeper to get well behind the effort.

With almost the last kick of the game, Muscat provided a late equaliser from the penalty spot with an emphatic conversion after Marcel Rozgonyi had brought Mols down as the Dutchman turned in the box.
