Smith is Raith's new target

Raith Rovers have decided not to further pursue their interest in Liberian international Victor Konwlo and have instead turned to Kilmarnock's Andy Smith, BBC Sport Online can disclose.

The Scottish First Division strugglers hope to sign the former Scotland B international before this week's signing deadline.

Konwlo's Portuguese outfit, Caldas Sporting Club, insisted that Konwlo was still registered to them and demanded 70,000 compensation.

But that was beyond the means of the cash-strapped Kirkcaldy club, who were keen to sign George Weah's international striking partner.

Manager Peter Hetherston said: "We would have liked to keep him. But we don't have 7, never mind 70,000."

Maybe resurrect it

Konwlo had arrived on trial along with AS Monaco reserve goalkeeper Samuel Monin has joined Raith Rovers on trial.

"We needed to get everything right when applying for a work permit and it was proving to be too much of a hassle," said Hetherston.

"But we have told Victor that, if he can sort things out with his club, we can maybe resurrect it for next season."

Hetherston is now pinning his hopes on Smith as he aims to solve the goalscoring problems that have helped plunge Raith into relegation trouble.

Smith has previously played for Airdrieonians and has been on loan with Ross County this season.

But it was during his last, successful spell in Fife, with Premier League Dunfermline Athletic, that he won B international recognition.

Not good enough

"I spoke to Andy Smith and Kilmarnock on Friday and I am hoping to have something sorted out soon," he said.

"He still has a year of his contact to run, but Kilmarnock are prepared to let him go.

"If you look at every other club in the division, they have someone who has scored upwards of 15 goals this season and our best is eight, which is not good enough.

"Andy has scored goals wherever he has played and I am sure he would do a job for us.

"It is tight down there in the relegation zone, but it is in our own hands and we must start taking more of the chances we have been creating."
