Chisholm joy for historic Queens

Feature: Delighted Queen of the South fans

Queen of the South manager Gordon Chisholm was delighted as his side reached their first-ever Scottish Cup final with a 4-3 victory over Aberdeen.

"I'm so proud," he said. "The spirit of my boys is fantastic and it showed as we outfought a Premier League team.

"Watching that game was a nightmare. Every time we got our noses in front, they kept clawing it back.

"For us to lose goals at set-plays is not like us and we kept giving them a chance to come back."

Club chairman Davie Rae was ecstatic after the thrilling encounter at Hampden.

"That's what you call an exciting game of football," he told BBC Sport. "It was terrific stuff.

"I was listening to the 1958 semi-final on the radio.

"But this has made history for Queen of the South as we've never been to a Scottish Cup final."

Queens midfielder Neil MacFarlane had a brief spell with Aberdeen in 2006 and enjoyed knocking out his former club.

"What a game," MacFarlane told BBC Sport.

"Three times Aberdeen came back, but there was great character from our boys. From mid-December they've been brilliant.

"We don't want to stop now. We can do it. Honestly, it's the best day ever."

If Rangers make it to Hampden for the final, Queens will be guaranteed a place in next season's Uefa Cup, even if they lose.

The SPL leaders, who will compete in the Champions League next term, are still two games away.

They face Partick Thistle in a quarter-final replay on Sunday, and the winners of that game will face St Johnstone at Hampden next Sunday.

"I hope they beat Partick and I hope they beat St Johnstone," MacFarlane said. "There's no doubt about that.

"To take this squad to Europe, honestly it's a miracle."

As the visiting fans from Dumfries celebrated, MacFarlane said: "You can see what it means to everybody. We'll party tonight, then we'll look forward to the cup final."
