Preston North End manager Phil Brown has praised the impact new signing Steven Smith made on his debut.

The 26-year-old signed a one-year deal at Deepdale following his release from Norwich City and played 72 minutes against Chesterfield on Tuesday.

"He hasn't been done at the back post all night because he has played left-back all his career," Brown told BBC Radio Lancashire.

"His quality on the ball is there for everyone to see."

Smith joined Norwich from Rangers in June 2010 and also had a loan spell with Aberdeen.

Brown added: "If you've played for Rangers you have to win games, you go into games with an expectancy level of having to win.

"And now Preston are in League One and I'm telling the team they have to win games, so that kind of mentality and attitude is priceless for me."
