Preston boss Phil Brown rules out Hayes loan to rivals

Hayes has made only 19 appearances since joining Preston

Preston manager Phil Brown has ruled out striker Paul Hayes joining any club currently fighting to avoid relegation from the Championship.

Hayes had been expected to complete a loan move to Derby, but with both sides struggling for survival Brown says it is a non-starter.

"Why should I benefit another club in and around where we are?," he told BBC Radio Lancashire.

"He'd only move if it was right for this football club."

Preston's hopes of avoiding the drop to League One were dented further at the weekend when they were beaten 2-1 by local rivals Burnley.

It means North End are now 11 points from safety, with just 13 games remaining.

We're a decent side but we've got to bring that decency to the table both defensively and offensively

Preston manager Phil Brown

"It hurt me a lot. It hurt my backroom staff a lot," said the former Hull City boss.

"It's OK playing pretty football but now it's about rolling the sleeves up. It's about hard work and grit and determination and fighting for every ball.

"In hindsight, you look back and if we had got a point on Saturday a lot of Preston fans would've gone home disappointed that they hadn't won the game. But because we lost it it's a building block process during the week.

"We aren't as bad as some people make out. We're a decent side but we've got to bring that decency to the table both defensively and offensively."

Preston travel to promotion contenders Norwich City on Saturday. There will be full commentary on BBC Radio Lancashire - the build-up begins at 1400 GMT.
