Preston striker Paul Hayes has said that his team could challenge for promotion this season.

The 26-year-old joined North End after leaving Scunthorpe in July.

Hayes told BBC Radio Lancashire: "I think we've got a great chance. You look at Blackpool last year, Burnley, Hull and Stoke before them.

"There are mid-table championship sides that have gone on to the Premier League and done well. We've got some great players here and that's why I'm here."

He added: "The gaffer wants to bring in a couple more players here and when he has I think we can have a right go this year."

Hayes, who spent the last three seasons at Scunthorpe and swept the board at last term's player of the year awards, added that he has developed an understanding with Chris Brown similar to that which he enjoyed with Gary Hooper at Glandford Park.

Hayes said: "Me and Gary (Hooper) worked well together over the last two seasons. My strengths helped out him and his helped out me.

"Chris Brown is a good player. It doesn't matter how well you know someone when you have two good players playing together you have got every chance of doing well.

"Chris has made me feel welcome ever since I came here and that can only help on the pitch."
