Preston manager Darren Ferguson demands play-off charge

Preston boss Darren Ferguson believes North End are still in the Championship play-off hunt, as long as they can put a strong run together.

Saturday's 0-0 draw with Blackpool left them seven points off sixth place, although only 10 points cover Leicester in sixth and Derby in 16th.

"Anyone who goes on a run now will move up the table quickly," Ferguson told BBC Radio Lancashire.

"It's so close that you've got to keep up your consistency and your results."

Preston will look to close the gap on their fellow contenders with victory over Derby at Pride Park on Tuesday.

They follow that with a trip to Newcastle on Saturday.

"We've two hard away games this week," said Ferguson.

"The most important one is the Derby game. If we can get the right result there we go into the Newcastle game with plenty of confidence."

Tuesday's meeting will see Ferguson, son of Manchester United boss Sir Alex, face Nigel Clough, son of Nottingham Forest and Derby legend Brian.

But Ferguson junior says his only focus will be on trying to move up the Championship table.

"We've got respect for each other," he said.

"His dad was a fantastic manager like my own father, but we're trying to get our own identity as football managers.

"There's a lot of people who, because of our name and my father's background, would like to see us not do so well. But you have to get away from that side of things and focus on the job at hand."
