Preston have appointed former Everton defender David Unsworth as their development coach.

The 35-year-old will work with the club's first year professionals overseeing their progression to first-team level.

Unsworth told BBC Radio Lancashire: "I'm delighted to be here. I was born in Preston and this is an important club to me. It's great to be back.

"I'm delighted to be working with Alan Irvine who's a phenomenal coach".

He added: "We've got five or six young pros who make the mainstay of the reserves and mine is an in-between role really.

"They are too old to play in the youth team but maybe not ready to go in to the first-team squad.

"Hopefully given a lot of hard work and training and development, we can get one or two or, in an ideal world, all of the players into the first-team squad."

Unsworth began his playing career at Preston as an under-13 before signing for Everton on schoolboy terms at the age of 14.

He added: "I remember playing for Preston on the plastic pitch as a 13-year-old. The way it is now is tremendous.

"This is my second club. People will always associate me with Everton and rightly so. But Preston will always be very special to me."
