Davidson has been recalled by Scotland this week at the age of 33
Preston captain Callum Davidson says that being written off by pre-season pundits will act as motivation.
Despite finishing sixth under Alan Irvine last season, North End have been tipped for a season of struggle.
"I've read a few articles saying we're going to finish within 15th and 20th," Davidson told BBC Radio Lancashire.
"That's motivation for me and the rest of the players. Last season we were relegation contenders and came sixth so let's hope we prove them wrong again."
Davidson, 33, has taken over as club captain at Deepdale this summer following the departure of Paul McKenna to Nottingham Forest. And he admits that he can see why North End so regularly get written off.
"We probably have over-achieved with the size of our club, the size of the squad," he said, "but that's probably what makes us stronger."
And he insists that this week's signing of Welsh international winger Paul Parry from Cardiff City will prove a terrific piece of business.
"It's good to have a fresh face, somebody different," he said. "He can play right across the front line. Left, right and up front.
"He's a real good bonus to add to our squad and he'll be desperate to show what he can do away from Cardiff."
