Transfer frustration for Preston

Preston manager Alan Irvine has admitted that the lack of transfer activity at Deepdale this summer is a big disappointment.

Irvine's players report back for pre-season training on 1 July with the no additions to the first-team squad.

He told BBC Radio Lancashire: "I have been in the office many days hoping to sign some players before the start of pre-season training.

"But it would appear that not very much is happening anywhere."

Perhaps things will happen now that most people are getting back to work

Irvine added: "There is plenty of time. It's just that ideally you would like to have the players in training with you and getting used to the way you want things to be done as soon as you can."

Irvine has made seven signings since replacing Paul Simpson at Deepdale in November 2007, four of which will be reporting back to their Springfields training base this summer. He has admitted that now is the time that the market may get busier.

"I think by and large everybody has been having a break. Nobody is in a rush to commit to anything. Nobody feels there is a need to panic or make quick decisions. Everyone is being very patient," he explained.

"Everything has been very slow. You look at the papers and nothing is happening. Perhaps things will happen now that most people are getting back to work."

Irvine has highlighted he would like to sign a central defender, due to Liam Chilvers' ruptured Achilles tendon injury and a left-sided midfield player.

Irvine added: "The priorities haven't changed. They were positions we needed to strengthen for different reasons and they are still the positions I am looking to strengthen at this time."
