Preston have signed highly-rated Oldham defender Neal Trotman for an initial fee of £500,000.
Trotman began his career as a trainee at Burnley
Trotman, 20, has made just 24 senior appearances for Oldham, and Preston's Championship rivals Plymouth recently tabled a £350,000 bid for him.
But he has now put pen to paper on a three-and-a-half-year deal at Deepdale.
Oldham could receive further payments based on appearances, while they will also receive a sell-on percentage if Trotman is subsequently sold.
He could make his debut for North End at Norwich this weekend.
In a separate deal earlier this week, Preston midfielder Jason Jarrett moved in the opposite direction, joining Oldham on loan.
