Preston midfielder Brian O'Neil is to retire from playing because of injury.
The Scotland international, 34, has not played this season and on Monday sustained a hamstring problem which would have kept him out until January.
O'Neil told Preston's website: "I've had four very good and successful years at the club. But everything changes in life and in football.
"After talking to my family and close friends I have decided to retire from the playing side of football."
He added: "This season I have found it very hard with my fitness and it is a natural progression for Preston to get the young players into the team.
"It's also time for the next stage in my life and I would like to wish everybody at Preston all the best for the future."
O'Neil joined Preston from Derby County in January, 2003 following earlier spells with Celtic and Aberdeen.
He started over 100 League games for North End and helped the Deepdale club reach the Championship play-offs in each of the last two seasons.
