Brown lands Preston job
Craig Brown is on the move to Deepdale
Former Scotland boss Craig Brown has been named as Preston North End's new manager.
The 61-year-old succeeds fellow Scot David Moyes, who recently moved to Everton. And the appointment was immediately welcomed by Preston legend Sir Tom Finney and former Deepdale star and BBC pundit Mark Lawrenson. Brown was one of five candidates interviewed by the English First Division club last week. He said: ""I've been 16 years with the SFA, and they have been very courteous and generous with me. "I think every coach wants to work day to day. International football is a privilege, but the real nitty gritty is club coaching. "In international football you can't make mistakes. If you do you are heavily penalised, because there's a lot of expertise in the other dugout whenever you play. "I've got to say I thought Kelham O'Hanlon did very well after David Moyes left. It was a difficult situation to take over. "I am happy to work with the staff and I hope they will remain. It will give them a chance to look at me and give me the chance to have a look at them. "I don't envisage any changes immediately. We will come together on 1 July, but I hope to meet the players informally before then. "I hope we will meet as many as possible before the start of the season."
Sir Tom Finney said: "This is another step in the right direction. We have been progressing as a club for many years now and Craig can take us to the next level. "He is a proven manager with both the Scottish international side and with younger players and I am sure he will be a huge success. I wish him all the best," he told the club's official website, www.pnefc.net. Brown, who has signed a four-year- deal, has worked in the media since resigning as Scotland coach in October after failing to guide them to this summer's World Cup in Japan and South Korea. Former Preston defender Mark Lawrenson also backed Brown's appointment. He said: "I think it is a good decision. He has done a very good job for Scotland for 10 years, with extremely limited resources.
"One thing people should remember is that David Moyes paid off his own back to go and watch Craig Brown coach, so I think we know we have someone who is good at the job and I also think he'll be a good manager and know how to deal with players.
"I think most people will say it is a good appointment. Bobby Robson has shown it doesn't matter how old you are, the more experience the better. "He's also a real gentleman and is open and honest and that is two of the key things. "He won't be quite as hands on as David Moyes, but you won't get a lot past him that's for sure." Current Scotland international Graham Alexander, who was handed his first cap by Berti Vogts in the recent defeat by Nigeria, backed Brown to take Preston into the Premiership. He said: "He obviously has the credentials. It is good to get it sorted now, because it can be difficult to appoint a new manager in the middle of the season, we now have plenty of time to work with him and hopefully he can take us to the next level. "The players don't really mind who does the job as long as they are successful and hopefully he can come in and take us up." Scottish midfielder Iain Anderson said: "I've spoken to him once before, when I was playing with the under-21s and he took a training session with us. "It was a good session and I enjoyed it, so I'm looking forward to him arriving. "He's known to be a good coach and I think that's what the board were looking for. It's a good new start for the club and all the players." He was formerly manager of Scottish part-timers Clyde, where he had experience of building youthful sides under severe cash restraints. Some reports suggest that Brown will retain Preston caretaker manager Kelham O'Hanlon on his staff. But former Motherwell manager Eric Black or former Scotland defender Colin Hendry will be Brown's assistant. O'Hanlon was himself on Preston's short-list, along with Wales manager Mark Hughes, while Kenny Dalglish's name was also being linked with the position.
