Portsmouth have signed Stoke winger Liam Lawrence on an emergency loan.

The deal for the 28-year-old Republic of Ireland international will become permanent in January.

Lawrence had been set to join Pompey on transfer deadline day, but vital paperwork was not submitted in time and the transfer was rejected.

"This is a satisfying outcome to an unfortunate situation," said Stoke chief executive Toney Scholes. "We all wish Liam well in the future."

Lawrence made just 14 Premier League starts for the Potters last season and has not figured in any of Stoke's fixtures during the current campaign.

"I'm delighted it's all done and now I just want to get out there and play for Portsmouth," said Lawrence.

"I'm coming to a huge club and it's now up to us to turn things around. We're hoping it will be onwards and upwards for the season."

Lawrence joined Stoke on loan from Sunderland in November 2006, before signing a £500,000 permanent deal at the Britannia Stadium two months later.
