Portsmouth's Algeria defender Nadir Belhadj has joined Qatari club Al Sadd for a fee believed to be around £3.5m.

The 28-year-old had offers from other European clubs but opted to sign for the 11-time Qatar league champions.

The Qatari team confirmed the move on their website but the length of the left-back's contract is unconfirmed.

"We were planning to sign him a long time ago and we managed to conclude the deal with Portsmouth," said Al Sadd general secretary Jassim Al Rumaihi.

Belhadj, who played for Algeria in the World Cup at South Africa, joined Portsmouth from French side Lens in 2009.

"Belhadj had a lot offers from European clubs but his desire to play with us helped us to make the deal," added Al Sadd's general secretary.

"He will join us in our training camp in Italy and Austria before being presented to the media when we return to Doha."
