Niemi completes Portsmouth move

Portsmouth have signed Antti Niemi on a one-year deal after bringing the former Finland goalkeeper out of retirement.

The 37-year-old former Hearts man made more than 100 appearances at Pompey's rivals Southampton before leaving the club in 2006.

He then suffered a serious wrist injury during a spell at Fulham last season.

Niemi will provide cover for England international David James, who has just turned 39. James was recently linked with a move to Sunderland.

The shot stopper was assessed during the recent pre-season tour to Portugal, and will now link up with Portsmouth goalkeeping coach David Coles, who previously worked at Southampton.

England internationals Glen Johnson and Peter Crouch have already been sold to ease the financial burden as Pompey aim to complete the sale of the club to chairman Sulamain Al Fahim.

The club also have Asmir Begovic and Jamie Ashdown as further options between the posts, although Begovic is likely to be loaned out to gain more experience.

Meanwhile, Pompey have released former France Under-21 midfielder Arnold Mvuemba by mutual consent.
