Portsmouth defender Hermann Hreidarsson has agreed a new one-year contract at Fratton Park.

The new deal includes the option of a further year - if Hreidarsson plays a certain number of games next season.

The 34-year-old Iceland international left-back had been linked with a move to Middlesbrough.

"Hermann's been looking at his options and he's decided he wants to stay," executive chairman Peter Storrie told the club's website.

"He's very strong and fit and had a great second half of last season.

"Hermann's a real character and a great influence in the dressing room, so we're pleased to have him back."

The former Crystal Palace, Brentford, Wimbledon and Ipswich defender joined Pompey in 2007 after a spell with Charlton.

He featured in the side that won the FA Cup in 2008 and played an influential role as the south-coast club pulled clear of relegation in the latter half of last season.
