Portsmouth boss Alain Perrin claims excessive prices thwarted his attempts to boost his squad with domestic-based English players.
Frenchman Perrin was keen to increase the number of Englishmen on his playing staff, which includes players of 17 different nationalities.
The Pompey boss told BBC Radio Solent: "It was our top priority to find some English players.
"We contacted some big clubs but the players we wanted were too expensive.
