Zambian football's technical director has denied reports that Portsmouth striker Collins Mbesuma was threatened by angry fans who found him in a bar.
The Post newspaper in Zambia said Mbesuma, 21, was spotted drinking at Luanshya's Kafubu Stadium ahead of the World Cup qualifier against Senegal.
But Kalusha Bwalya said the reports were "deplorable".
"Collins Mbesuma reported to camp fully sober which was witnessed by my entire technical staff," he said.
"The reports that he was found drinking are false."
Bwalya said Mbesuma reported late to the Zambia training camp on Wednesday ahead of Saturday's match - which Senegal won 1-0.
The technical director said the striker had been to watch his former club Roane United.
"When the fans realised Collins was present the police escort was necessary given Collins' popularity in Zambia," said Bwalya.
Police in Luanshya confirmed Mbseuma was kept in a police station to protect him from angry supporters.
Portsmouth signed Mbesuma from South African club Kaizer Chiefs for £750,000 during the summer and he is yet to start a Premiership game for Pompey.
