Portsmouth are lining up a move for Moscow Dynamo striker Dmitri Bulykin.
Dynamo are only interested in a permanent deal and want £1.5m for the 25-year-old Russian international while Pompey would prefer an initial loan
Bulykin recently had trials at Bolton and Crystal Palace and Pompey chairman Milan Mandaric admitted: "Dmitri has been with us for a few days.
"He is just the type of player we need, a top-class taget man who is excellent in the box,"
Bulykin showed his paces at Euro 2004 where he scored against eventual winners Greece.
His arrival could pave the way for Jamaican striker Ricardo Fuller to be the latest to make the exodus from Fratton Park to Southampton.
Southampton signed midfielder Nigel Quashie last week, to follow boss Harry Redknapp, assistant Jim Smith and coach Kevin Bond along the M27.
Bulykin's arrival will also increase speculation that Pompey could part company with striker Yakubu.
Newcastle boss Graeme Souness has admitted an interested in the 21-year-old Nigerian.
