Anthony Griffith works hard for first Port Vale goal

Port Vale midfielder Anthony Griffith hopes his first goal in league football will be the first of many for the club.

Prior to scoring Vale's goal in the 2-1 home defeat by League Two leaders Torquay on Saturday, Griffith had only previously netted in the Conference.

But, after 95 games without a goal for Vale, his extra work in training to improve his strike rate has paid off.

"I'm out there working hard on my shooting every single day," Griffith, 23, told BBC Radio Stoke.

"Last year I worked on my passing after training and it paid off so I said to myself why can't shooting practice pay off for me as well."

Griffith did score four times in his one season in the Conference with Halifax Town in 2007/08 prior to joining Vale. But he never hit the target for his first club Doncaster Rovers or in loan spells at Oxford United, Darlington and Stafford Rangers.

Griffith has also praised the role of fellow Vale central midfielder Gary Roberts in improving his game.

"When he came in the summer I thought he was fantastic, seeing him spray balls around and work on his passing," added Griffith.

"He's just someone to learn off as well.

"We both work off each other. He has attributes that I don't have and I have attributes that perhaps he doesn't have."
