Port Vale striker Marc Richards has signed a new two-year contract that will keep him with the League Two club until the summer of 2012.

The 27-year-old, who joined Vale from Barnsley in 2007, was the Valiants' top scorer this season with 23 goals.

He told BBC Radio Stoke: "I want to be a part of what is going on a Port Vale.

"I was part of the team that got relegated two years ago and I want to help the club progress to League One and maybe even the Championship."

Richards' current deal at Vale Park was due to expire this summer and the former Blackburn and Northampton man had attracted interest from a number of Scottish Premier League and League One sides.

His goals helped Vale to a 10th-placed finish in League Two, four points outside the play-offs.

"I want to progress on what I achieved last season," he added. "I want be as good as the top goalscorers in the league.

"I want to be top of the charts, not finishing fifth or sixth. Hopefully if I can do that then the club will be pushing for promotion as well.

"After three years here I owe it to the fans and the club to try and get them back into League One."

Versatile Kris Taylor has signed a new one-year deal.
