Port Vale midfielder Anthony Griffith has spoken of his joy at being voted the club's player of the year.

Griffith, 23, told BBC Radio Stoke: "Any award is good, but this year's been fantastic for me.

"I've worked hard on and off the pitch, it's paid off. I hope that's an example to the younger lads."

The former Doncaster midfielder, who played 48 games during the campaign, was also voted the player of the season by the club's away supporters.

"I was playing out of position in my first season, and this year it was just a case of proving that I can play in the middle of midfield," said Griffith. "It's been fantastic and I've enjoyed it.

"All I had in my mind was working hard, because I knew what I had to work on and that's probably been the key to my success."

Griffith, who joined Vale in May 2008, has been offered a contract to stay at Vale Park for the next two seasons.

Manager Micky Adams told BBC Radio Stoke: "There were some outstanding candidates to challenge for it, but Anthony's been consistent, fully committed, and I think he's a worthy winner.

"You never have to worry about him, he's always got a smile on his face and he's a terrific pro."

Defender Lee Collins picked up the chairman's player of the year and the players' player of the year prizes, while goalkeeper Chris Martin won the young player of the year award.
