Port Vale top scorer Marc Richards is in talks regarding his future with the League Two club.

Richards, who finished with 23 goals, is out of contract this summer - but insists he is happy at Vale Park.

"I've always said I want to stay and I hope we can sort something out sooner rather than later," Richards, 27, told BBC Radio Stoke.

"There's been early discussions, but now the season's over and done with we can sit down and discuss things."

Richards is one of nine Vale players whose future has still to be settled by manager Micky Adams.

Vale failed to make it into the play-offs on the final day of the season, drawing 1-1 against Shrewsbury on Saturday.

We've got a lot of talented young players, and we just need a bit of experience to show us the way

With results elsewhere going against them, even a win would not have been good enough for Vale to finish in the top seven.

However they ended the campaign strongly and Richards believes the nucleus of the squad is in place to mount a push for promotion next season.

"I think we just need a bit of experience," said Richards. "We've got a lot of talented young players, and we just need a bit of experience to show us the way."
