Top scorer Marc Richards has paid tribute to the 2,001 Port Vale fans that travelled to Bury on Saturday.

Richards scored his 21st goal of the season in the 1-1 draw at Gigg Lane, as Vale missed the chance to move up into the play-off places in League Two.

The 27-year-old told BBC Radio Stoke: "It was an emotional moment for me to stick the ball in the net.

"It was a good atmosphere and it was a little bit unfortunate that we couldn't get the three points for them."

Bury were forced to move some of their season ticket holders for the game, in order to accommodate the away supporters.

I'm not sure if the lads will have played in three bigger games in their lives

Vale would be in sixth position if they had held on to the lead, but Efe Sodje scored a late equaliser to deny Micky Adams' side their sixth win in nine matches.

"We're still well in there," continued Richards. "There are three big games left to play, and I'm not sure if the lads will have played in three bigger games in their lives.

"We want to get as many points as we can from now until that last game."

Vale's remaining fixtures are against promoted Notts County [home], Bournemouth [away] and Shrewsbury [home].
