Port Vale defender John McCombe has admitted it was a relief to net his first goal of the season in the 1-0 victory over Shrewsbury on Saturday.

McCombe's header gave Vale their first away win of the season in League Two.

"I'm really glad to have a got a goal and glad that it turned out to be the winner," McCombe told BBC Radio Stoke.

"I've had a lot of chances this season but I took this one. At the end of the season I want to have clocked up a half-decent total for a centre-half."

Micky Adams' side are sitting in mid-table after 12 league games, but the former Huddersfield and Hereford defender is confident that the team can push for promotion.

"Looking at the draws that we've had, we could have turned a lot of those into wins," added the 24-year-old, who has started all 16 games for Vale this season.

"We're on the right road, there's definitely been an improvement from last year and hopefully that can continue."

Vale make the short trip to the Alexandra Stadium to face local rivals Crewe in their next match on Saturday.
