Vale closing in on defender Yates

Yates began his career with Vale's local rivals Crewe Alexandra

Managerless League Two side Port Vale are set to make Morecambe defender Adam Yates their first signing of the summer, reports BBC Radio Stoke.

The 25-year-old former Crewe trainee is out of contract at Christie Park after three years with the Shrimps.

Yates, who lives in nearby Leek, has an agreement in place to sign for Vale when he returns from holiday.

He was part of the Morecambe team that won promotion to the Football League for the first time in May 2007.

In all, Yates has made 89 starts during the past three seasons, helping Morecambe to establish themselves in League Two.

Meanwhile, Vale chairman Bill Bratt told BBC Radio Stoke on Friday that the club are hopeful of appointing their new manager by the end of May.

John Ward, Micky Adams and Richard Money are the front-runners for the position, which was vacated by Dean Glover at the end of the season.
