Port Vale boss Martin Foyle has welcomed the signing of former Fulham midfielder Sean Doherty.
Doherty, 20, who was recently with Dutch side ADO Den Haag, was an unused substitute in Friday's 2-1 win over Doncaster in the FA Cup third round.
"Sean is an exciting player who can go forward on the left - we need his quality," Foyle told Vale's website.
"He has represented England at different levels, but at the moment he needs to play games."
Doherty failed to make a first-team appearance before leaving Fulham last summer to join Den Haag.
His only previous Football League experience was one substitute appearance in a brief loan spell at Blackpool in September 2003.
