Vale set for Ashcroft signing
Port Vale are closing in on a deal for Wigan Athletic striker Lee Ashcroft.

The 30-year-old is currently training at Vale Park and in contract talks with boss Brian Horton.

Ashcroft is apparently surplus to requirements at Wigan, who bought him from Grimsby Town for 350,000 in August, 2000.

He has also had two spells at hometown club Preston and played for West Bromwich Albion, scoring 75 goals in 301 League starts during his career.

Horton made room in his squad for a new striker by releasing winger Jon McCarthy.

Ashcroft could make a debut against Division Two leaders Oldham Athletic on Saturday, if a deal can be finalised.
