PFA loan money to Plymouth Argyle's unpaid players

The Professional Footballers' Association has confirmed that it is giving financial support to the players of cash-strapped Plymouth Argyle.

Plymouth's squad are still awaiting their January wages, having been paid late in both November and December.

The PFA paid part of the players' November wages, contributing a loan of up to £5000 for each player.

Chairman Gordon Taylor said: "We've already helped out and we need to look at the situation again for the future."

The PFA first got involved at Home Park last year when it was contacted by Pilgrims goalkeeper Romain Larrieu, the club's PFA representative.

We want to do all we can to make sure they survive

Taylor told BBC Spotlight: "We've been in touch with the club and the players for some time now and have been keeping abreast of the situation."

Plymouth survived a winding-up petition in the High Court last week after clearing a tax bill of £760,000 with HM Revenue & Customs.

However, Peter Ridsdale, football consultant to the Plymouth board, has said a further £2 million is needed to ensure the club survives until the end of the season.

Although the club's players remain unpaid for January, office staff at Home Park have received their wage packets.

Taylor said: "We're probably going to be going down there soon, looking to see if we can help.

"They're one of the few clubs in the South West and we want to do all we can to make sure they survive."

A spokesman from Plymouth Argyle told the BBC that the club have not approached the PFA for help, and are still working on ways to bring the players wages up to date themselves.
