Sir Roy Gardner feels Argyle can bounce straight back

Plymouth Argyle chairman Sir Roy Gardner has said the club has a good chance of returning to the Championship next season.

Gardner made the comments shortly after the already-relegated Argyle lost 3-0 at Nottingham Forest on Saturday.

He told BBC Radio Devon: "I think we need to learn from all of our experiences this season.

"It's disappointing, but with one or two additions I think we'll have a good chance of bouncing straight back."

He added: "I'm not going to be negative about what happens next year, on the contrary I think positively about it, and I'm encouraged by some of the things that I've seen."

The Argyle chairman said one of the board's key concerns ahead of life in League One is reducing the number of players on the books at Home Park.

He said: "Clearly we've got a very big squad, it's a wage bill that is too high for the revenue that we actually achieve, so we have to do something about that."

However, Gardner refused to be drawn on confirming that head coach Paul Mariner will still be the man in charge come August.

"We've said to Paul that we'll sit down and talk to you about the future after the end of the season," said Gardner.

"We're not there yet, and I don't want to take his mind off next weekend.

"I think Paul [Mariner] has done some very good things and I think Paul assisted by John Carver is a good combination and we're very pleased about that.

"But I think it's a little premature to talk about what's going to happen next year.

Gardner, who became chairman of Plymouth last July, also said he has no regrets since becoming a director at Home Park.

He said: "I love the club, I love the atmosphere, I love the people and I relish a challenge. I don't like losing and we have to turn that around.

"We've put some money into this club, and we'll continue to put money into this club."
