Mariner still hoping for great escape

Plymouth boss Paul Mariner wants to stay at Home Park whatever the outcome of the current campaign.

The 56-year-old has been unable to move Argyle clear of the relegation places and they are now five points of adrift of safety with just three games left.

When asked if he would like to stay at the club beyond the end of the current season, Mariner told BBC Spotlight: "Of course, I love this place.

"I want to be here passionately, I care about what I'm doing," he added.

But the former England striker acknowledged his future with the club is dependent on the will of the board.

"It's up to the bosses," he said. "I want to be here and I think what we've done since we've been here, if you look at the record, is not too bad."

Mariner began his career at Home Park in the 1970s and following a series of assistant coaching roles in the United States it was the Pilgrims who gave him a chance at the top job.

"This is where I'm employed and this is the club that gave me the start and also a start in management," he said.

"And I want to prove to the people, to the fans, to the board, to everybody that we can do this job and I know that we can."

The first of Plymouth's remaining three fixtures is on Monday at home to Newcastle, with Nottingham Forest and Peterborough making up their final two games.

And Mariner is still hoping Plymouth can pull off a great escape.

He said: "We've got to play two of the best sides in the division. To pick up points from those two teams is going to be difficult. Is it impossible? No.

"You don't know in football and especially in this division, I defy anybody to predict what's going to happen."
