Scot buoyed by Mariner's arrival

Plymouth Argyle boss Paul Sturrock has said the arrival of Paul Mariner as head coach has created a new impetus amongst the staff at Home Park.

Since he re-joined the Pilgrims last week, Mariner has been working closely with Sturrock on the training pitch.

Sturrock told BBC Radio Devon: "Paul's a fresh face, a fresh voice and he's very up and at the players.

"He's got a bit of zest for life and he's brought in a lot of routines that the boys have enjoyed," the Scot added.

On a personal level, Sturrock also credited Mariner with bringing a renewed enthusiasm to his own job.

He said "It's been a while since I've got my teeth into things like I have over the last ten days, so I've really enjoyed it.

"Him and I have worked hand in hand as far as the training is concerned and I've enjoyed myself as well."

However, the Pilgrims boss was quick to point out that Mariner's arrival at Home Park does not diminish the pressure on himself.

"There's always pressure on a football manager," said Sturrock.

"Results are the key to it all and at the end of the day we've got to start pegging back some of these teams above us, we don't want any more gaps developing."

The next test for the new-look coaching duo at Home Park is a trip to the Riverside Stadium on Saturday, where Gordon Strachan is set to take charge of Middlesbrough for the first time.

Sturrock said: "I don't think you'll find that Gordon will put much influence into his team after four or five days in charge, so I think he'll be very much taking a back seat and looking from afar.

"But with a new manager and new players all having to impress, a big crowd will turn up, so let's hope that we can spoil the party."
