Plymouth show interest in Mariner

Plymouth Argyle director Keith Todd has said it would be good for the club if former player Paul Mariner joined the backroom staff at Home Park.

On Friday Kevin Summerfield left his post as assistant manager with the Devon side.

Mariner, who coaches in America, has subsequently been linked with the role.

Todd told BBC Devon: "I don't deny if we could pull something off [with Mariner] it would be very interesting and very good for the club."

He added: "Hopefully in the next few days something very clear will come out that's related to Paul Mariner."

Summerfield's departure from Home Park came after he was told his contract would not be renewed next summer.

He had been number two to current Plymouth boss Paul Sturrock during both of the Scot's reigns at Argyle.

And Todd was keen to stress that any move for the services of 56-year-old Mariner would not be at the expense of Sturrock.

He said: "Paul Sturrock's done a great job for the club, is still doing it and he's the team manager.

"There's always plenty of things that could happen that will change the situation.

"But certainly in all the work that we're doing at the moment we're working through all of the details with him."

Todd concluded: "Paul is very firmly the football manager."
