Larrieu named Argyle club captain

Plymouth Argyle's player of the year Romain Larrieu has been named their club captain for next season.

The Pilgrims had no club captain last year after long-term skipper Paul Wotton joined Southampton.

"Romain has been involved with the club for a long time and is a good ambassador and organiser off the park", boss Paul Sturrock told the website.

Meanwhile, fellow goalkeeper Lloyd Saxton, 19, has signed a new one-year contract at Home Park.

He will provide cover for the 32-year-old Frenchman, who will not lead the team out in the Championship as he is not team captain.

"I am not a great believer in goalies being team captains," Sturrock said.

Larrieu made his debut in an LDV Vans Trophy game in 2000 against Bristol City, and has gone on to make 256 appearances for the club.

Sturrock hopes Larrieu's experience will rub off on Saxton.

"I'm very pleased with his development," added the Argyle boss. "It's difficult for a young goalkeeper. It takes a long time to gain the experience you need.

"He will be on the bench [for first-team games] next season and play in reserve matches. That will help him come along."
