Plymouth's Walton put up for sale

Plymouth midfielder Simon Walton has been put on the transfer list and fined two weeks' wages after his red card in the 2-0 defeat at Barnsley on Saturday.

Walton, 21, was sent off for kicking out at Anderson Da Silva after a foul.

"I do feel that it's only appropriate. He's let down his fellow players which is a big disappointment to me," Sturrock told BBC Spotlight.

He was signed by the club in the summer for a potentially club record 750,000 fee, depending on appearances.

"I feel that after several times emphasising his petulance on the football pitch, it's best for both parties that I put him up for transfer," said Sturrock.

"I did over emphasise the situation to him.

"Over the last couple of games there have been near incidents where he could have got himself sent off and lo and behold he goes away and does it."

Walton had only just forced himself back into the Argyle line-up after being out of favour for the best part of three months, and has made nine appearances since his move in August.

Sturrock frustrated at Walton behaviour

"Sometimes the mental approach of the players can be the problem," Sturrock added.

"Physically. I think he was getting in good shape and he has shown a range of passing for us and did all the right things in the last couple of games but I cannot stand for what happened on Saturday."

Earlier, Sturrock had warned on BBC Radio Devon: "I just cannot believe the boy's mentality to get back in the team and then show that kind of stupidity. It will cost him dear.

"It's very difficult to play with 11 men in this league never mind 10."

But the manager was full of praise for the rest of his players as they battled to try and get something out of the game following Walton's red card.

He said: "I'm proud of every one of the players in the second half because their work rate was unbelievable and things just didn't drop for them in the right areas of the box."

Over his career, Walton has been sent off on six separate occasions, including three red cards in less than five months between November 2006 and April 2007 while on loan at Ipswich and Cardiff City from his then parent-club Charlton Athletic.

Walton began his career as a trainee at Leeds United in 2004 and moved to Charlton for 500,000 in July 2006.

He never broke into the Charlton first team and left the Valley for Queens Park Rangers in the summer of 2007 for 200,000.

He started just one match and made four appearances from the bench for the London side, before being loaned out to Hull City for the second half of last season where he made 10 appearances for the Tigers before rejoining QPR.
