Ferguson to stand by keeper Lewis

Peterborough manager Darren Ferguson said he will not drop goalkeeper Joe Lewis despite another error in Saturday's 3-1 defeat to Yeovil.

Lewis has made a series of costly mistakes in recent matches.

And Ferguson told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire: "Don't get me wrong, he can't keep costing us but I'm confident he'll get through it.

"I can understand why fans want Mark Tyler back but I'm standing by Lewis one hundred percent."

Lewis joined Posh from Norwich in a club-record deal in January 2008, replacing the long-serving Mark Tyler.

He played a starring role as Posh claimed promotion from League Two last season.

Tyler is currently on loan with Bury and could be recalled but Ferguson will be doing all he can to help Lewis through his current run of bad form.

"I've got to stick by the boy, everyone was raving about him last season," he said. "You can see the confidence is draining out of him but he's got to play through it.

Posh lost both James Chester and Lee Frecklington to injury prior to the match while Charlie Lee limped off early in the first half.

Despite being forced to play most of the match with a make-shift backline, Ferguson had little sympathy for his players.

"We're losing bad goals at bad times but second half we had a right go and I can't criticise the players for their effort."

Ferguson was delayed in talking to the press after meeting with chairman Darragh Macanthony following the defeat.

The Posh chairman is keen for the club to make it back-to-back promotions at the season, and Ferguson admits he was far from happy with the defeat.

"The chairman's come over to see the game, and he's as disappointed as anyone. We all know what the chairman is like and he's a winner, but in football it's not all a bed of roses."
