Peterborough United have signed Wycombe's out-of-contract right-back Russell Martin on a three-year deal.

Martin, 22, will arrive at London Road on 1 July after a season in which he started every League Two match for Wycombe, helping them to the play-offs.

Posh manager Darren Ferguson told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire: "He's a very consistent player and is flexible.

"His main position is right-back which is what we've brought him in to do but he can play midfield and centre-half."

He continued: "He never missed a game last season, was Wycombe's best player and I'm really pleased to get him."

Martin was out of contract at Wycombe but, as he is under 24, Peterborough will have to pay compensation for the player.

If the clubs are unable to agree a fee, then it will be decided by a tribunal.

Martin replaces right-back Claude Gnakpa who left the club after failing to negotiate a new contract.

However, Ferguson said he was not too concerned with the cost, adding: "Obviously we're going to have to pay some sort of fee but I wouldn't imagine it would be too high."

The Posh manager admitted he expected more new players to join Martin in the coming weeks as the club prepare for League One football.

"We're waiting over the next couple of days on a couple we're trying to get in, but as is the case with some players they want to take a bit of time thinking about it," he said.

Martin told the official Posh website: "The ambition of the chairman and the management team is brilliant and I see this move as a new challenge.

"I wanted to play at a higher level and further my career."
