Oldham striker Matt Smith praises non-league football

Oldham Athletic

Oldham striker Matt Smith has credited his time in non-league football for bringing about his move to the Latics.

The 21-year-old was released by Cheltenham as a trainee and rebuilt his career with Droylsden, Redditch and Solihull Moors.

"My time in non-league is where I did all my developing, playing against men and the adjustment that comes with it," he told BBC Radio Manchester.

"I felt that I could make the step up and scoring goals gave me confidence."

Smith scored 23 goals in 27 appearances last season which prompted a number of Football League clubs to become interested in the 6ft 6in forward.

In the end he chose Boundary Park and signed a two-year deal with the Latics after finishing a business degree at the University of Manchester.

"It has been an adjustment - finishing university and then starting a new career at Oldham," he added.

"But it's been fantastic and I've loved every minute of it so far."
