Paul Dickov aims for managerial big league

Paul Dickov
Oldham player-manager Dickov is in his first season in management

Oldham Athletic boss Paul Dickov is as ambitious for success as a manager as he was as a player.

The former Scotland international numbers Arsenal, Manchester City and Leicester City among his former clubs, but admits his respect for the club's loyal supporters means it is City which, after Oldham, is closest to his heart.

The feisty striker was Alan Ball's final signing at the club before he was sacked and is remembered for scoring the equalising goal in injury time against Gillingham in the 1999 second division play-off final.

In two spells at the club Dickov made two hundred appearances scoring forty-one goals.

He told BBC Radio Manchester's In the Spotlight: "I want to go as high as I possibly can as a manager but there's no guarantees at all.

"The average life-span of a manager in League One is ten months so if I'm sitting here in a year's time I will have done well.

Asked about the possibility of becoming City manager, Dickov said: "I can't say that, but the one thing I do want to be is successful. It would be a dream for me if something like that happened, but the one thing I've never done is get carried away with what I've been doing career-wise."

In the interview Dickov also goes into detail on other topics including comparisons with Carlos Tevez, his La Manga experience when he was accused of sexual assault and being a Scot who has spent the majority of his life in England.

To hear the interview in full tune into BBC Radio Manchester on Thursday 14th October at 1800-1900 BST on 95.1FM, DAB and online at If you miss the show you can listen again via the BBC iPlayer.
