Oldham chairman Simon Blitz quits Boundary Park

Oldham Athletic

Oldham chairman Simon Blitz and director Danny Gazal have quit Boundary Park with immediate effect.

The pair along with Simon Corney, who will now take over as chairman, were known as "the three amigos" after saving the club in 2003.

Blitz cited personal and economic pressures for ending his seven-year association with the Latics.

"I don't feel I'm able to give the supporters the contribution they are looking for in the future".

Oldham were in administration in 2003 and threatened with going out of existence when Blitz, Gazal and Corney bought the club and safeguarded its future.

Blitz said: "Last season I invested a further substantial amount of money into the club and with reduced income from season ticket sales this summer, the demands on me were becoming too great.

We are talking to potential investors, but they have to be the right people

He continued: "I have met lots of nice people and enjoyed my time, but have found it a constant battle and uphill struggle in more recent times."

New chairman Simon Corney insists the club's future is not at risk.

"We have prepared our budget for the season, know our income and are also seeking other sources of income and means of financing the club," he said.

"We are also talking to potential investors, but they have to be the right people to take the club forward. What we don't want is a short-term fix."

Oldham are currently in discussions about a proposed new stadium in Failsworth, with Corney moving to reassure fans that they won't be affected by the resignations.

"The plans haven't changed. Our business plan for the new stadium is a self-supporting development and it was never going to be a case of having to rely on an individual putting money in."
