Oldham boss Dave Penney wants his squad to emulate the "mental toughness" of players like centre-half Sean Gregan.
The Latics have lost six of their last seven league matches to slip to within a point of the League One drop zone.
He told BBC Radio Manchester: "Mental toughness comes when you've played a certain amount of games.
"Sean Gregan has got it; Pawel Abbott has it; Reuben Hazell has it. We haven't enough with mental strength. But it's up to the young kids."
He added: "We've got to do the basics right, do the ugly stuff right.
"That means blocking crosses like Sean does; getting hit in the private parts from shots on goal.
"It's what we're not quite doing at the moment."
