Notts County have allowed midfielder Johnnie Jackson to leave for League One rivals Charlton Athletic.

Jackson spent just one season with the Magpies after joining from Colchester in August 2009 but wants to return to London for family reasons.

The 27-year-old is Phil Parkinson's third signing in a week following Alan McCormack and Gary Doherty.

"Our supporters will have seen him briefly last season when he played well for us on loan," Parkinson said.

Parkinson knows his new signing well from their days at Colchester and added: "His versatility - his ability to play left-back, left midfield or centre midfield - will be very important to us going forward."

Jackson had a spell on loan with the Addicks last season when he made four appearances before returning to Nottingham before the end of the campaign because of injury.

Magpies manager Craig Short said: "When a player is away from his wife and young child it can be very hard and sometimes you have to evaluate what is important in life.

"I completely understand and support Johnnie's decision. Family comes first, as I'm sure our fans can appreciate, and while I was looking forward to working with Johnnie this season he leaves with my blessing and support."
