Notts County deny Campbell claims

Notts County have rejected claims by Sol Campbell that he left the League Two club after just one game because he was misled over transfer targets.

Defender Campbell insisted in a Sunday newspaper that he was told County would sign Roberto Carlos and Benjani.

But Magpies chief Peter Trembling said Campbell was wide of the mark.

"I've never talked about Benjani at all," he said. "Sven (Goran Eriksson) did talk about Roberto Carlos but it never got beyond a conversation."

Trembling said most of the club's targets were "more aligned to Division Two" rather than players of the calibre of Brazil international Carlos and Manchester City striker Benjani.

Sven has no plans to be manager, I can categorically guarantee that

Asked about possible future signings, Trembling told BBC Radio 5 live's Sportsweek programme: "If you're talking about someone who has played 70-odd games for their country then 'no'."

Trembling also tried to defuse speculation that the club were poised to replace manager Ian McParland.

Former Inter Milan boss Roberto Mancini and ex-England manager Steve McClaren are among the famous names who have been linked with the position.

But Trembling said: "Ian is doing a sterling job for us, he's a good coach, he's got a good pedigree.

"There were reports that he's one game away from the sack - we've lost three games and nothing has happened.

"It's paper talk. Like every manager, he's judged by results but that's over a period of time."

Director of football Sven-Goran Eriksson has also been tipped as replacement for McParland.

But Trembling responded: "Sven has no plans to be manager, I can categorically guarantee that."

Trembling also rejected suggestions that the Football League would investigate the owners at its next board meeting on 8 October.

"There is no investigation. We've completed the 'fit and proper persons test', which we have to do quite rightly for the directors of the football club.

"Of course they have asked more questions because it is unusual circumstances - a private overseas investment trust - and they want to know more about that.

"We've no issues with that, we've given them everything they need so far. What they have actually said is if they need anything further then they'll come back to us."
