Notts County strikers Jason Lee and Lawrie Dudfield are among eight players being released by the club.

Boss Ian McParland told BBC Radio Nottingham: "Jason has been the perfect professional. He trains as if he's 18 and when he plays he gives his all.

"That's why he's stayed in the game until 36. Some younger players should look at how he conducts himself."

The list of departures also includes Austin McCann, Lee Canoville, Andy Parkinson, Gary Silk and Matt Somner.

On County's official retained list, only keeper Kevin Pilkington, defender Mike Edwards and youngster Stef Frost, of the players due to be out of contract, have been offered new deals.

"You want to freshen things up and juggle things about," said McParland. "But it's not a nice time of year. I've been in with managers when they've told me I've not had a job. It's a cruel game."

But the Magpies boss was upbeat about the capture of veteran defender Michael Johnson from Derby following a successful loan spell at Meadow Lane.

"We've got a budget to stick by and we've done well to get Michael Johnson," he said. "I'm pleased he wanted to come here.

"He's a good type in the dressing room. He's got leadership qualities; he opens his mouth, he talks and he pulls people about. We didn't have too many who did that, and that was important.

"It's good for the supporters and it's good for me."
