Steve Thompson is hoping to make Junior Mendes his latest signing.
The Notts County boss has already recruited three strikers, but faces competition from Yeovil and Bristol Rovers to sign Mendes, 29.
"He is very quick and has some good experience; he played a part in taking Grimsby to the play-offs last season," Thompson told the club's website.
Strikers Lawrie Dudfield, Jason Lee and Tcham N'Toya have all joined the Meadow Lane club this summer.
