Nottingham Forest have completed the signing of striker David McGoldrick from Southampton for a fee of £1m.

The 21-year-old, who started his career at Notts County, has signed a four-year contract at the City Ground.

The Nottingham-born forward was ever-present in Southampton's Championship campaign last season, scoring 12 goals.

McGoldrick told the club's website: "I'm a Nottingham lad and to get the chance to come back home where my family and friends are is a dream."

He added: "Following Southampton's relegation my agent told me that a few clubs were interested in me.

"Once I became aware of Forest's interest, I told him to get me there and he's managed to do that, which I'm very grateful for."

Saints head coach Mark Wotte said: "David has family connections in Nottingham and was desperate to play in the Championship. We wish him well."

The fee will boost cash-strapped Saints, who may have new owners soon as their parent company has been in administration since April.

McGoldrick made four appearances for Notts County's first team before joining Southampton for an undisclosed fee, aged 16, in August 2004.

He returned to the Magpies on loan the following year, and also had loan spells at Bournemouth and Port Vale, but was a regular for Saints last season as they were relegated to League One.
